Are baby wipes safe for infants?

Modified: 30 April 2016

Hey people, hope you are all doing good.

As we all know, newborn’s skin is very sensitive and they must be handled with care.  Baby wipes are generally used instead of a cloth to clean the baby and it contains cleansing agents. Parents may arise with questions like Can I use baby wipes on my newborn? Will it cause any allergic reaction on my baby’s skin?  What kind of baby wipes can be used? And so on. Most of them are confused since wipes are convenient to use but they also want to know if it’s safe.

Doctors recommend that for first few weeks, a soft paper towel can be used after diaper changes.  You can also use a cotton ball or a clean cloth dipped in warm water to wipe his/her skin until your baby is one-month-old. If needed dab on a gentle baby wash soap and then clean.  Remember to pat the area dry with a towel to prevent diaper rash.

After one month, when your baby is ready for wipes then you can start using an alcohol-free and unscented wipes which minimize irritation. If your baby’s bum develops redness or rash that seem severe then you need to consult your pediatrician. If a particular brand is harsh on your baby’s skin, then you can change the brand until you find the good one that doesn't affect your baby’s skin. There are preservatives and harmful ingredients in many popular brands and baby wipes which can cause an allergic reaction to baby’s sensitive skin. There is a chemical called methylisothiazolinone(MI) which can cause red rashes  in kids. So dear parents you need to buy products that don’t bother your baby’s skin.

Preservatives are used in order to have a wet environment in your wipes box. And there is confusion whether baby wipes can be used on the body and face. Yes, you can use normal baby wipes on their bum, hands and face. Big brands will just try to trick you just for the sake of marketing.

Make your Own wipes for your baby

Baby wipes are easy to make and they are cheaper than the manufactured products. Let me give you the things needed for making baby wipes:

  • Roll of paper towels and cut in half
  • 1 tablespoon of baby wash ( organic )
  • 1 tablespoon of baby oil (organic)
  • 1 and half cups water
  • A container to keep the baby wipes in.

Steps to make them:

1. Mix the baby wash, baby oil, and water in a container.

2. Put one of the paper towel in the solution and wait for 10 to 20 mins.

3. After the solution has been absorbed through the paper towels, take a cardboard roll and pull it. You need to make sure it pulls out cleanly.

4. You can pull your baby wipes from the center of the roll  as when you need them.

These wipes are safe to use and are environment-friendly too. Make them once a week and store them in a container. Since we have not used any preservatives it might get dry soon. Keep them at room temperature.
